Research leaders:

Ian Potter, Fiona Valesini and Margaret Platell

Research team:

Tash Coen, Matt Hourston, Steeg Hoeksema and Michelle Wildsmith

Key research

  • Fiona Valesini – Quantification of different habitat types in the metropolitan Swan River Estuary.
  • Steeg Hoeksema and Fiona Valesini - Comparisons of fish faunas at present (2003 onwards) with those recorded in 1977-1981, in order to elucidate the extent of any changes in the compositions of those faunas and the likely factors causing such changes.
  • Michelle Wildsmith - Determination of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in the Swan River Estuary, and comparisons of such assemblages in the nearby Peel-Harvey Estuary during the present day and during the early 1980s.
  • Tash Coen – Determination of the main factors influencing the compositions of hyperbenthic invertebrate faunas in the Swan River Estuary.
  • Matt Hourston – Examination of the composition of the nematode and other meiofaunal elements in different habitat types in the Swan River Estuary.
  • Thea Linke and Margaret Platell – Determination of trophic interrelationships, using traditional and highly sophisticated techniques, in the upper Swan Estuary, with a view to elucidating the likely impact of algal blooms and resultant fish kills on the food webs in this estuary.
